National Rail Museum

The National Rail Museum is a rail enthusiast's heaven! It was opened in 1975, and operates as part of the Science Museum in London. It is based upon the old York North Motive Power Depot, and the building retains much of the atmosphere of a steam roundhouse, while still display the numerous locomotives and rolling stock in convenient display. Of particular note is a Merchant Navy pacific Ellerman Lines , which has been sectioned to show the internal layout and workings.

The central first class compartment commands a much higher standard of comfort than the second class compartments on either side.

This is a Peak Forest Canal Co. truck, built in 1797, and running on plate rails at a gauge of 4 foot 2 inches. The photographer's son admires the relic.

These wheels, from the centre driving wheels of a broad gauge (7 foot) Bristol and Exeter Railway locomotive, have a diameter of 8 foot 10 inches. These are even bigger than the driving wheels on the html_link(lner/index.html#Stirling8ft-1,Stirling 8ft Singles)!

This replica was constructed in 1930 to celebrate the centenary of the Liverpool and Manchester line, and was on display at the sesqui-centenary celebrations at Liverpool Road Station, Manchester. The carriage was based upon contemporary horse coach styling, right down to the stirrup-style foot boards.
